Neglecting AC maintenance is a sure-fire way to decrease the efficiency of your AC system while increasing your electric bills. Here are three maintenance tips to help you keep your cool during a sweltering Las Vegas summer.

Clean Your HVAC Filter

It’s hard to imagine that indifference toward your HVAC filter can wreak havoc with your comfort, but it can. When your HVAC filter is clogged, it restricts airflow and causes your air handler to work overtime to compensate. Energy consumption goes up by 15%, and so does your energy bill. Clogs also cause frozen evaporator coils (think AC repairs) and inconsistent cooling throughout your home.

Check Your Condensation Pipe

As the warm air in your home flows through the evaporator coil, the humidity condenses on the coil and drips into a pan below. The water then flows into the condensation pipe and is routed into a floor drain or outdoors. If algae or mold builds up and clogs your condensation pipe, you’ll likely have water pooling. If your system is one that has a drain float, your air conditioner will automatically shut off if the condensation pipe becomes clogged, robbing you of soothing relief in the middle of a Las Vegas summer.

Inspect Your Outdoor Unit

Airflow comes into play here, too. As the summer wears on, grass, hedge trimmings, and leaves can collect on your outdoor unit or get stuck on your condenser fins and fan. Along with cleaning your fins and fan, clearing debris from around your unit ensures that your system gets the airflow it needs to cool your home properly.

Although you can do these maintenance tasks yourself, some jobs — such as charging the refrigerant and fixing electrical issues — require the help of a professional HVAC technician.
